Just goes to show that 75 year olds had different schooling than us younger folk (I turn 60 next year), and when I was in 7th grade, plate tectonics was the dominant model and only an old stick-in-the-mud teacher would have claimed that South America wasn't once attached to Africa. North America too, actually, up near what we call Morocco now (the Anti-Atlas mountains are the same age as the late Appalachians, the Allegheny age part).

Your teacher shouldn't be teaching science.

Yes it did used to be connected to Africa at one time in the past.
